In case you missed it, Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) recently published the Corporate Net Zero Standard (CNZS) Version 2!
In a major update, the CNZS now clearly recognizes indirect action as a tool to deliver on emissions reductions. SBTi has introduced an implementation hierarchy that first prioritizes actions that directly reduce emissions in company operations and value chains, then allows for actions within broader activity pools, and then sector-level actions. Market-based instruments, including energy attributes and commodity certificates (also known as environmental attribute certificates or EACs), now have a clearly defined role to be utilized by companies in meeting their targets.
We are thrilled to see the AIM Platform Standard and Guidance directly referenced in the CNZS, and to see the AIM Standard recognized as a valuable tool to support companies as they implement the standard. To clarify how the AIM Standard supports CNZS implementation, we’re developing an interoperability guide, which we’ll share in the near future.
What will be included in the interoperability guide:
- Details on how the AIM Standard can serve as an implementation tool to meet the requirements of CNZS Chapters 4.1 and 4.2.
- How the AIM Standard can serve as an implementation tool to meet a requirement in CNZS 5.2 on separate reporting of actions and instruments.
- How companies can use the AIM Standard to meet the minimum integrity criteria in CNZS V2.0 for Scope 3 actions.
